Story

The rich assemblage of surviving drawings that form part of the extensive studies for the Baglioni Entombment demonstrates the fascinating course of Raphael's preparations for the commission. This drawing has preserved the actual modello for the group on the left in the Entombment (Galleria Borghese, 1507). It is the last study, in which the final composition is for the most part established. Squaring enabled the drawing, which was on a smaller scale, to be transferred easily to the larger format of the painting.
